I AM GOING TO A CITY,
WHERE THE STREETS WITH GOLD ARE LAID.
WHERE THE TREE OF LIFE IS BLOOMING,
AND THE ROSES NEVER FADE.

HERE THEY BLOOM BUT FOR A SEASON;
SOON THEIR BEAUTY IS DECAYED.
I AM GOING TO A CITY,
WHERE THE ROSES NEVER FADE.
LOVED ONES GONE TO BE WITH JESUS,
IN THEIR ROBES OF WHITE ARRAYED.
NOW ARE WAITING FOR MY COMING,
WHERE THE ROSES NEVER FADE.

HERE THEY BLOOM BUT FOR A SEASON;
SOON THEIR BEAUTY IS DECAYED.
I AM GOING TO A CITY,
WHERE THE ROSES NEVER FADE.

WHERE THE ROSES NEVER FADE...
NEVER FADE.
JANIE WEST METZGAR WROTE THE LYRICS IN 1929.
HER SON, ROBERT METZGAR COMPOSED THE MUSIC.

SHE MARRIED WILLIAM METZGAR WHO WAS AN  ASSEMBLY  OF  GOD PREACHER.  THEIR CHURCH WAS IN SAN ANGELO, TEXAS.  IN ADDITION TO BEING A TEACHER, AND PASTOR'S WIFE,  JANIE METZGAR WAS

SHE WAS A SINGER AND SONGWRITER.   HER  FIRST  SONGS  WERE PUBLISHED IN THE EARLY 1920s AS PIANO ARRANGEMENTS IN SHEET MUSIC.   SHE RECEIVED SEVERAL AWARDS FOR HER LITERARY AND SONG CONTRIBUTIONS.

JANIE METZGAR WAS DIAGNOSED WITH LUEKEMIA AT AN EARLY AGE.  DOCTORS GAVE HER NO HOPE OF RECOVERY.  SHE SUFFERED GREAT PAIN FOR MANY YEARS IN REMISSION.  DURING THIS TIME, SHE WROTE SOME OF TODAY'S GREAT BAPTIST HYMNS.  TO SEE A LIST OF HER SONGS, SEE   "JANIE METZGAR."
